"It's Piper, you guys remember Piper? I know, I know, he stopped doing the rogue thing but he isn't like Mr Goodie or nothing. He came to visit me when no one else did." Not that he blamed anyone here, they were all adults with their own stuff going on but it meant a lot that Hartley came and he didn't want to leave him hanging. "He was supposed to visit me in two days so I'd want to give him a heads up is all."
Maybe still get his jelly beans too.
He turned to Mark and grinned. "But thanks bro, loving the support. Nice development."
Given the last time they hung out, Mark called him a fag by accident and then got flustered and talked about how straight he was for a solid five minutes. "Luckily I'm still single." And with that, he winked at Mark. It was hard to resist.
"I'm not!" Mark tried to hide behind Shawna, who just shrugged and patted his knee.
"Give it a minute. But Piper, huh? I was wondering what he was up to. It has to be a lot less fun being grumpy when you have no one to be grumpy at." At least she would imagine as much.
Lisa frowned and shook her head. "Don't worry about that, Axel. You are prolific, they are sure to report about you having gotten out. Piper is going to know. If you visit him, he'll have to call the cops. You don't want to risk that."
"He won't call the cops on me. He's my friend. And I'm--" No, he wasn't going to share his conversations with Hartley. Not that he called him special or sweet boy, not that he spoke to him like a person and told him how much he liked him. Hartley was his friend, he'd never betray him.
But he couldn't betray Lisa either. He just literally saved his ass.
"Okay, tell you what, I'll give us some time to establish ourselves and prepare... then I'll contact Hartley. From an unknown number. I know how to make my stuff untraceable, yeah?"
"Deal." Lisa trusted Axel's skills where masking such things were concerned, she trusted his skills with a lot of things, which was why she had wanted him as part of the team in the first place. "Now, first of all we are going to head home and then we are going to party. Don't you worry, Axel, we have shots, karaoke and Mark is practically a fog machine and good for wet t-shirt contests."
"...sure." This was what he had his meta powers for.
"Welcome back, Axel. Your choice in take-out tonight."
Axel beamed excitedly As he crawled forward and hugged Lisa from behind, careful not to mess up her driving as he remained there, beaming and holding onto her. "Love you, Lis." He kissed her cheek and then let himself flop back down, pulling out his rat pictures and proceeding to show the others.
He didn't know Lis so well but they'd clicked the brief time he'd known her. Sometimes he felt like he knew her perfectly, despite just meeting. It was surreal. She was special, that's all he knew.
